Recommendations on Northern Infrastructure to Support Economic Development

The National Aboriginal Economic Development Board, an Aboriginal think-tank, released its report, Recommendations on Northern Infrastructure to Support Economic Development, on January 20, 2016.

Infrastructure deficit

This report identifies the significant infrastructure deficit evidenced across the North as well as the associated negative impact on the quality of life and economic development across Canada's North.

Focused and strategic infrastructure investments

The report recommends enhancements to transportation infrastructure, telecommunications, and improvements to energy infrastructure to encourage resource development as a means of supporting social and economic development across the North.

Every $1 has the potential to generate $22

The report and the National Aboriginal Economic Development Board recommend strategic infrastructure investment and have found "that each dollar spent on Northern economic infrastructure has the potential, if invested wisely to generate $11 of economic benefits for individuals and $11 of fiscal benefits for governments."

Strategic investment

This report and its recommendations are particularly timely given the Federal Government's pledge to invest in infrastructure.
