
Service Overview
NSSI (Nunavut Sealift and Supply Inc.) provides essential marine transportation and logistics services to the Arctic. Operating primarily between July and late October, the fleet delivers vital supplies, vehicles, and construction materials to remote northern communities.
2026 Sealift Operations
- Booking Status: Reservations for the 2026 season are now being accepted.
- Schedules: Delivery windows are community-specific and depend on ice conditions and vessel rotation.
- Incoterms: Standard shipments are handled under specific maritime terms; ensure your cargo insurance is aligned with sea transport regulations.
Mandatory Packaging Standards
To ensure safety during sea transit and rough-terrain offloading, all cargo must adhere to these strict packaging rules:
| Category | Requirement |
| Palletizing | Use sturdy hardwood pallets. Items must not overhang the edges. |
| Crating | Wooden crates must be able to support three times their own weight for stacking. |
| Securing | Use ¾” to 1¼” metal strapping depending on load weight. Plastic shrink-wrap alone is not sufficient. |
| Machinery | All vehicles must have less than ¼ tank of fuel and disconnected batteries (unless otherwise specified). |
Labeling & Identification
Every piece of cargo must be clearly marked on at least two opposite sides with the following:
- Consignee Name: (The person or company receiving the goods).
- Destination: The specific Arctic community (e.g., Iqaluit, Rankin Inlet).
- Weight & Dimensions: Total weight in kg and volume in cubic meters ($m^3$).
- Handling Marks: “This Side Up,” “Fragile,” or “Keep Dry” icons where applicable.
Dangerous Goods (Hazmat)
Shipments containing hazardous materials (batteries, fuel, compressed gas, chemicals) require:
- Proper Documentation: A completed Dangerous Goods Declaration.
- UN Numbers: Must be clearly visible and at least 12mm high.
- Certification: A valid Maritime TDG (Transportation of Dangerous Goods) certificate from the shipper.
